Formula E – where Speed meets Sustainability
Posted on: 19 September, 2018
The thrill of speed. The excitement of regen. The rush of a win. Formula E brings to the podium the ingenuity in engineering that never fails to delight. But, all-electric motorsport is so much more than just that. With increasing concerns about climate change, the need for growth of technology in electric mobility hasn’t been greater. And with sustainability being the name of the game, Formula E is now being seen as the future of racing.
In 2014, Formula E became the first all-electric racing series in the world, and there has been no looking back since. Over the years, not only has it gone on to attain a substantial fan base, but has also immensely helped in building Electric Vehicle technology for the future.
The series has already broken a number of motorsport barriers, including hosting a race in Switzerland. The Zurich E-Prix in Season 4 was the first motor race in the European nation since 1954.
We are now less than 100 days away from the start of Formula E Season 5 where a total of 11 teams will be competing for the Championship. All teams will be taking to the streets in the Gen2 – a race car that looks like it's straight out of Gotham!
Excited? There's more. The race format has been changed to make things thrill-a-minute. There will be no pre-defined number of laps, rather the race will last 45 minutes à la Mario Kart mode.
One of the teams that have been there from race one is Mahindra Racing. We were one of the founding members in the series and continue to thrill fans across the globe.
Season upon season, we have made huge strides forward. With extreme passion for extreme machines, we have gone from finishing eighth in Season 1 to finishing third in Season 3, and securing two race wins in Season 4.
But like we earlier mentioned, it's not just the performance on the race track that we care about. With our commitment towards carbon neutral operations, Mahindra Racing is the only Formula E team accredited by FIA Institute's Sustainability Programme.

Our commitment to sustainability doesn't just stop in the racing series. With a vision to bring EV technology from race to road we are keen to define the future of mobility. The improvement of technology in Formula E certainly does play a big role in advancement of technology on the road. At the end of the day, the idea is to inspire a beautiful blend of sustainable design and engineering that we all can benefit from – one that will accelerate us into co-creating a cleaner future.
Commuting...is going to move dramatically towards ride sharing, towards fleets, towards electric cars…

The recently concluded Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, California saw the M5Electro -– our race car for Season 5 – showcased to an audience that truly appreciates sustainability. The event was co-chaired by the Mahindra Group Chairman, Anand Mahindra – whose belief in electric mobility is immense.
