Four Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Formula E Driver Jérôme D’Ambrosio
Posted on: 31 December, 2018
We are only one race into the season and our new driver Jérôme D’Ambrosio has already made his mark!
A strong performance from Jérôme in the Ad Diriyah E-Prix saw the Belgian secure a podium finish on his debut, bringing the #64 M5Electro home in third place. We are confident that this is just the beginning and there is a lot more to come from the 33-year-old this season.
While Jérôme’s skill on the race track is well known, here’s a few facts you might not know about the multiple Formula E race winner.
Competed in every single Formula E race to date
The all-electric series is currently in its fifth season and has made a big impact on the world of motorsport in a few short years. Jérôme has witnessed the rise of Formula E since the beginning as he is one of a small group of drivers who have competed in every single E-Prix since the very first race in Beijing in 2014.
At the age of 28, he entered the inaugural season with Dragon Racing, putting in some impressive performances. He scored points in nine out of the 11 races, including a victory in Berlin, before eventually ending the season in fourth place.
Jérôme spent three more seasons at Dragon before bringing his skills and experience to Mahindra Racing for the 2018/19 season.
Go-karting over football
In Belgium, like most European countries, the sport that is on everyone’s mind is football. It was no different for Jérôme, who loved to kick a ball around as a young boy like most of his friends.
It all changed though when a young Jérôme was taken go-karting during a vacation with his mother and sister. That was a key moment in his life and career as he started competing seriously soon after, and opted to give up his football to put all his focus on karting.
It's fair to say that Jérôme made the right call and we’re glad about it too!
Sport outranks gym
As is the case with any sport, Formula E places physical demands on its competitors. To perform in a world leading series, it is beneficial for drivers to be at optimum fitness.
So, what does Jérôme do to get into shape before a race? According to an interview with HUGO BOSS earlier this year, the 33-year-old loves to mix up his training regime. He said: "I have a general training routine in order to keep fit and drive the car at its best level. I do cycling, gym training, yoga. I like to discover new sports. I just discovered yoga which I quite enjoy, combining it with some more traditional training, some tennis, some football. In general I like sports where you can have fun as well, not just lifting weights in the gym."
While he might have not taken up football as a career, he still does play the beautiful game as well as spend some time on the tennis court.
Julia Roberts was his first celebrity crush
Having grown up in the early 1990s, it's no surprise that Jérôme's first celebrity crush was Pretty Woman actress Julia Roberts. The future Mahindra Racing driver revealed this during his 'My First Time' episode with Formula E a couple of years ago.
