The final stretch is here: Tech forecast for New York City E-Prix

TECH TALK

Posted on: 13 July, 2018

Here we are. The final weekend of the season. A season that began in Hong Kong in 2017 with a bang for us, but recent races haven’t really been kind to us. Going into the New York City E-Prix in fourth place, our main aim is to end the season in the same way as we started it! Here, we have our Chief Engineer Vinit Patel with the tech preview ahead of this weekend’s races.

We’re looking forward to New York and ending the season on a high with a strong result for both cars in both races to prove that Mahindra have still got the pace in season four; definitely looking forward to getting back on that podium.

It’s now down to a two-horse race between Sam Bird and Jean-Eric Vergne, and the ball is definitely in JEV’s and Techeetah’s court; but you simply cannot discount Sam as he’s been very strong all season and has brought home results even when it has looked like they’ve been struggling. He cleaned the board last year in NYC and he knows he’s strong with good pedigree. Hopefully, it’ll be a tight championship race all the way to Sunday evening with no early celebrations for anyone on Saturday night.

The track itself is a power hungry and interesting one. It has been extended this year and we assume that the new surface in addition to the surfacing work done last year especially for the races is pretty much the same.

It was quite grippy straight out of the box, a lot more than we expected, so we’re assuming that the new section will have something similar; we don’t expect that last year’s new surface will have degraded that much either. From the overview, the new section looks like three distinct corners, but from our simulations, we’ve seen that it’s more of one long, hard, sweeping turn that essentially takes you through about 350 degrees and causes an extreme amount of stress and impact on the left hand side tyres.

The Brooklyn Circuit is a high-energy track and since there’s going to be a lot of coasting, we’re definitely going to have a lot of pressured overtaking and defending at various parts of the track. So, do expect surprises!

Definitely going to have a lot of pressured overtaking and defending.

New York is always a great place to end the season and there will be plenty of opportunities to go exploring. The highlight for me is the view of the magical Manhattan skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge Park, and I’m looking forward to taking a few quiet moments there, at some point.

Don’t forget to catch us in action in the New York E-Prix on 14 July 2018 at 19:30 UTC and on 15 July 2018 at 19:00 UTC.
