- Mahindra Racing celebrates best ever points finish with third and fourth position in central Paris street race.
- Nick Heidfeld takes second podium in a row in Formula E back-to-back races followed by teammate Felix Rosenqvist.
- Mahindra Racing starts to close the gap on second place in the Teams’ Championship with fourth podium of the season.
20 May 2017, Paris: Mahindra Racing has scored back-to-back podiums and its best-ever double points finish with a sensational team performance in today's 2017 FIA Formula E Paris ePrix.
German driver Nick Heidfeld picked up where he left off just seven days ago with a solid run to third place, just one position ahead of his Swedish teammate Felix Rosenqvist. The combined team result represents an improvement over last weekend's Monaco ePrix when the drivers took third and sixth respectively.
All four of the team's M3Electro racecars performed faultlessly throughout the 49-lap race around the Les Invalides street circuit in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, offering superior energy efficiency while matching the pace of the race leaders.
After both drivers qualified just shy of the series' Super Pole shootout session in sixth and seventh, they started the race in fifth and sixth following a ten-place grid penalty for competitor Oliver Turvey.
Heidfeld immediately jumped from fifth to fourth on the opening lap, with Rosenqvist following suit to overtake Esteban Gutierrez not long after. A collision down the field forced early pit stops for most drivers.
The Mahindra Racing pair successfully swapped to their second cars to emerge in the same order as before and in the perfect position to capitalise when Jean-Éric Vergne collided with the temporary concrete barrier.
The team's performance in Paris was made extra poignant in front of popular Indian actress Gul Panag, who was a special Mahindra Racing guest this weekend. Gul had a taste of Formula E action herself recently with a test drive of the upcoming M4Electro.
Today's podium, the team's fourth of the 2016-17 FIA Formula E Championship, allows Mahindra Racing to close the gap on ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport in the teams' standings with just six races left to run.
Dilbagh Gill, Team Principal, Mahindra Racing Formula E Team said, "At the halfway mark of the championship, I think we are back where we needed to be! It's satisfying to be solidly in third position in the teams' standings because that has been the aim for us from the beginning of the season. These past two weekends in Monaco and Paris have been very nice. Both drivers expertly controlled their race pace and we had our positions well under control. The team has done a fantastic job and after a moment of celebration, we will look directly forward to the next event in Berlin."
Nick Heidfeld said, "It's great to have two podiums in a row! This is one of the best circuits of the season and you simply cannot beat the surroundings. It was another exciting race and the good thing is that we were a lot more competitive than we were in Monaco. It was nice to see that I had similar pace to the leaders and had a lot more energy available. I was a bit unlucky with some of the traffic and lost some time, but that's racing. It's a great result for the team, the best-ever result again – after we already had it in Monaco! To top it now starts to get difficult! P3 and P4 is already quite nice, but we all push flat out. I like to help motivate the team where I can because we’ve made big jumps ahead and improvements. We cannot stop working hard until we reach our final target - to win!"
Felix Rosenqvist said, "It was a good day for the team! Starting P5 and P6, the target was to bring home the points today. We both managed to gain places in the first stint, and then with Jean-Éric Vergne out, we gained one more. I had Nick in front of me and we protected ourselves as a team to make the best possible strategy for both drivers. We made sure we did not interrupt each other's energy usage and just have a clean race, and it worked out really well. It was good to be back where we should be! We're still waiting for that first win, but it’s just around the corner now."
Six remaining chances for victory
There are now just six races remaining in the FIA Formula E Championship, all being run as "double-headers" on three separate weekends. The regular one-day format, which includes two practice sessions, qualifying and the race, will be repeated the following day with a full points spread on offer each day.
Next month on 10-11 June, Mahindra Racing will tackle the Berlin ePrix (twice) for Heidfeld's home race followed by the final two circuits of New York and Montreal in July. With some other teams’ drivers absent for upcoming races, Mahindra Racing is arguably in the best position to fight for race victories and improve on third place in the Teams' Championship.
