Less than two weeks since Mahindra Racing’s 50th race in Hong Kong, the squad returns for the second and final Asian leg of the season this weekend. Ready to bring the fight to the sixth round of the 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship at the inaugural Sanya E-Prix will be Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Pascal Wehrlein.
Sanya is one of three brand new locations for season five and it's also the first time Formula E returns to mainland China since the Beijing E-Prix in seasons one and two. Located in southern Hainan, the E-Prix will take place on an 11 corner, 2.236km track held against the stunning backdrop of Haitang Bay.
Mahindra Racing has previously finished inside the top five in China including fifth position with Karun Chandhok in 2014 followed by a podium finish with Nick Heidfeld in 2015. Mahindra Racing heads to Sanya third in the team's championship with Jérôme second in the driver's fight and the team is looking to capitalise in Sanya, with the objective of both cars finishing in the points.
"When I have raced in mainland China in the past, it’s always gone well for me and we will try to score some big points in Sanya. We need to focus on doing our best at every race; we’ve always had the pace and been fast in the dry, so I expect us to be back fighting for the podium again this weekend. Going to a new circuit is always a challenge, but it’s something you get used to racing in Formula E and we are not going unprepared, having done a huge amount of work on the sim ahead of going there."
"Firstly, I hope it isn’t raining in Sanya! We know we have the pace and we’re strong in dry conditions, but it's really difficult to make a prediction because we’ve had a different winner at every race weekend this season so far. Qualifying will play a big part on race day; we need to make sure we put together the perfect lap. I’m looking forward to going to China; the fans are enthusiastic and they love racing, so now we focus on fighting for the podium again."
DILBAGH GILL, TEAM PRINCIPAL
"Having two Asian races back-to-back in such a short amount of time is an intense turnaround, but we've regrouped, and we're focused on having a strong race weekend in Sanya. We know the competition is strong this season, but we're fast approaching the halfway point and we've shown that we're not to be underestimated. We’re still close to the top in the championships so we're looking forward to getting back out on a new track and finishing the race in the best possible position."
The Sanya E-Prix will take place on Saturday 23 March 2019 at 15.04hrs local time.

Mahindra Racing is one of ten founding teams – and the only Indian team – to compete in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, the world’s first all-electric racing series. Mahindra Racing has impressive credentials; after scoring it’s breakthrough win at the Berlin E-Prix in 2017, the squad now has four race victories to it’s name in addition to 17 podiums, and six pole positions from 45 starts. After four seasons with the first generation race car, all eyes now turn to season five. Mahindra Racing has high ambitions with the Gen2 M5Electro, a technical innovation that will see the car last the duration of a race as Formula E continues to push the limits of technology and electrification.
