Sustainability

Mahindra Racing is not only committed to expanding the limits of technology and innovation on the race track, but also to addressing the impact of climate change. Using our platform and expertise we aim to lead the way in creating a more sustainable future, and we have made big steps to get there.

At Mahindra Racing, we take sustainability and environmental issues seriously. Mahindra Racing was the first Formula E team to achieve FIA Environmental Accreditation. The squad first successfully attained the rating “Progress Towards Excellence” in November 2016 and, following a periodic audit in February 2019, maintained its status in the framework. In October 2020, it was awarded Three-Star accreditation, which is the top level possible and demonstrates excellence and best practice in the area.

The FIA Sustainability Accreditation programme is aimed at helping motorsport stakeholders measure and enhance their environmental performance. It introduces clear and consistent environmental management into motorsport and provides stakeholders with a framework (based on internationally recognised environmental standards and guidelines) against which to accredit their activities. There are three levels of star accreditations within the FIA environmental certification framework. One-star rating is basic practice up to three-star rating which is best practice.

The team is committed to the FIA Environmental Accreditation programme by minimising its environmental impact and working towards achieving carbon neutrality. It also takes learnings from advanced technologies in its race car to apply it to its road cars within its Race to Road initiative, developing and promoting more sustainable transportation solutions.

Our sustainability initiatives are spearheaded by Anirban Ghosh and, under his leadership with co-chair of the Global Climate Action Summit and Formula E Sustainability Committee member, Anand Mahindra, Mahindra has developed an award-winning sustainability framework.

Pledged to the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework

We believe that ‘doing good’ goes beyond philanthropy and CSR, it is more than just random acts of kindness. ‘Doing good’ is a purpose, an attitude, and a way of life; it is our guide for conducting business and ourselves. As a team that is committed to finding credible, advanced and next generation mobility solutions while being kind to the planet, at Mahindra Racing we pledge to greater ROCE, which, for us stands for Return On Climate and Environment. Sustainability is not a buzz word for us; it is ingrained into our ethos and a big part of the reason we are racing in Formula E.

We have been on this path of reducing our impact on the planet since our birth in 2014 and six years later we achieved a Carbon Net Zero footprint since inception. We are also certified with Three-Star Excellence in Sustainability, making us the first Formula E team in history to receive the highest sustainability accolade by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), motorsport’s world governing body.

Our efforts are, and will continue to be, in tandem with Mahindra Group’s commitment and quest to achieve group-wide carbon neutrality. The sustainability framework is a comprehensive tool that guides Mahindra Group’s actions, and it has a long-term commitment towards the preservation and improvement of the environment. We now look to the future towards setting innovative, competitive yet sustainable mobility benchmarks for the world in our ‘Race to ROCE’.
